About Us

Unidos de Brisbane is a not-for-profit organisation that brings together Brisbanites who are passionate about Brazilian culture, and Brazilians living in Brisbane to create a united Brazilian Arts society.
Samba societies in Brazil (commonly referred to as samba “schools”) are creative community centers where locals of all ages unite to celebrate the music and dance of samba. They also design and create costumes, and build stunning sculptures with themes that are often reflective of their day-to-day lives.
These community centres also provide a place for locals to socialise, and come together to inspire and help each-other. In this spirit, we aim to provide an opportunity for all dancers, drummers, musicians, artists and the creative community at large to unite and immerse themselves in the joy of samba.
Unidos de Brisbane has an artistic residency at Backbone Youth Arts*, in East Brisbane, where we are able to regularly hold passista and bateria rehersals, special workshops, cultural training, community events, and ensaio de quarda-style fundraisers.
Our Backbone residency allows us to connect with other creative arts groups specialising in a variety of arts practices, and to collaborate on new and exciting projects. It also provides us with a space to call home, where we can grow and be creative with the local community!

Our Values

Community

Community

Our first core value is to unite the samba community in Brisbane and South East Queensland under a common Unidos de Brisbane banner. To unite Brazilians living in Brisbane with Brisbanites who have fallen in love with Brazillian culture, to form a cultural arts collective.

Culture

Culture

Our second core value is culture. Unidos de Brisbane aim to be a vehicle for the promotion of traditional and authentic Brazilian culture in Brisbane. We provide an opportunity for locals and expats to immerse themselves and their families in the culture of samba and the Brazilian arts.

Education

Education

Our third core value is learning and education. We aim to learn and teach others about Brazilian arts and culture through samba, dance, drumming and Portuguese. This provides an opportunity to foster a collaborative learning environment where community members can come together to share knowledge.

About Backbone

Established in Brisbane over 30 years ago, Backbone has its home at the East Brisbane Bowls Club, which has been transformed into a vibrant arts hub where people come to be creative, see shows, and host their own unique events.
Backbone facilitates artistic learning and risk-taking, as well as the creation of new and exciting works. Their year-round programming includes workshops, performances, festivals, events, resources and training, and providing space for all of this to happen in.
Every year Backbone hosts the Backbone Festival, one of Brisbane’s largest under 30s cultural arts festivals. Unidos de Brisbane is excited to announce that as part of our residency, we will be contributing work to this festival. Keep an eye on our upcoming events for more details.

Our Team

Unidos de Brisbane is a volunteer-based, not for profit community arts organisation. Our administrative team is made up of individuals from various cultural backgrounds, who have a variety of skills and talents, but all share a passion for Brazilian dance and music.
Our members volunteer their time partaking in projects and other aspects of the samba school’s day-to-day functions. This includes everything from facilitating workshops and rehearsal, creating or fixing costumes, attending working bees at our home venue Backbone, to live performances at arts events. We value the time volunteers put into our projects.
If you would like to get involved and have a skill you feel would be useful, please get in touch.
