Drumming

Samba is a genre of music from Brazil, with roots in both traditional African rhythms as well as the European polka. It is wide and diverse genre, that includes everything from samba carioca (Rio carnaval-style), to samba reggae*, bossa nova*, samba de roda*, and pagode*. At Unidos de Brisbane, we focus on Samba Carioca. The Unidos de Brisbane Bateria: Samba schools are typically centered around a bateria, or the samba drumming section – this is similar to a percussion orchestra. Each bateria, led by its mestre (conductor), has its own style and particular rhythmic breaks that make it unique. This drum orchestra can play accompanied by musicians (as in the samba enredo), or perform as a powerful and energetic stand-alone unit. Our bateria trains fortnightly with our passistas at Backbone, in order to create the synergy between drum and dancer required for a harmonious performance. Both groups take part in parades and community events throughout the year. Play with us: If you would like to join our bateria, please get in touch (contact link).
